Derivatives Market (VİOP)

What is the Derivatives Market (VIOP)?

The Derivatives Market (VIOP) is a market where futures and options contracts based on stocks, indices, foreign exchange, energy, commodities, precious metals, TLREF, government domestic debt securities, and foreign indices are traded.

A futures contract is a standardised agreement to buy or sell a specific asset or index at a predetermined price and date.

An option contract grants the investor the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price by a specified date or on the specified date. The party granting this right is then obliged to fulfil the obligation if the counterparty to the contract exercises the right.

Key Features of VIOP:

  • Profit from Trading Activites: This opportunity allows for the generation of profits from both rising and falling prices by leveraging market price fluctuations.
  • Risk Management: Can be used to protect against price fluctuations and reduce risk.
  • Leveraged Trading: Enables to take larger positions with lower margin requirements.
  • Two-Way Trading Opportunity: Positions can be taken in both the buy and sell directions.
  • Extended Trading Hours: Certain contracts have longer trading hours.

What are the Advantages of VIOP?

Leverage Effect

Leveraged transactions involve taking a position with an initial margin that is smaller than the position size.

Arbitrage

Investors can generate risk-free profits by capitalising on the discrepancies between spot and forward prices through forward transactions executed for arbitrage purposes.

Hedging

Futures and option contracts provide protection against price fluctuations in the underlying asset. An investor with a foreign currency receivable or payable can take a position in futures and option contracts to hedge against the risk.

Interest Accrual

TRY collateral deposited with Takasbank is accrued daily by Takasbank.

Portfolio Diversification

Portfolio diversification is an important strategy for risk management. In VIOP, it is possible to achieve portfolio diversification using both futures and options contracts.

Two-Way Trading

In VIOP, it is possible to generate trading profits by taking positions in both the upward and downward directions.

Tax Advantage

Gains from equity and equity-indexed contracts in VIOP are subject to a 0% withholding tax. Gains from other contracts (foreign exchange, gold, energy, etc.) are subject to a 10% withholding tax. Please be advised that all gains from contracts for institutional investors are tax-exempt.
